The three web seminars in the series will focus on Hydra, an open source project that gives institutions using Fedora a framework for rapidly producing highly tailored and polished digital library applications. Collectively, the Hydra Partners have produced a range of solutions for different content types (ETD's, articles, images, media, data, etc.) and services (institutional repositories, archiving born digital materials, preservation systems, etc.) that complement Fedora and enable libraries to realize the full potential of repository-powered solutions.  
 
This webinar series will introduce the Hydra project, demonstrate some of its many solutions, and delve into its technical components. Begun in 2008 among three founding institutions and (at the time) Fedora Commons as a strategy for pooling resources to build common solutions, the project's guiding slogan has been, "if you want to go far, go together." There are now more than a dozen partner institutions and a distributed development team that far eclipses what any individual institution might muster.

"A Case Study on General Repository Applications," will be presented by Rick Johnson, Co-Director, Digital Library Initiatives and Scholarship Program at the University of Notre Dame along with Richard Green, Consultant to Library & Learning Innovation at the University of Hull. In the second part of this three part Hydra webinar series, we will provide overviews and demonstrations of Hydra implementations currently in production at various institutions. Showcasing the breadth of Hydra's utility, we plan to include applications for IR, Digital Exhibits, audio and video management, ETD's, datasets, image libraries, and workflow management.

"HydraTechnical Deep Dive," will provide a basic introduction to the development methodology and software components involved in creating digital repository solutions with Hydra. Presented by Matt Zumwalt, Technical Lead, Hydra Project for MediaShelf, we'll look at the parts of the Hydra framework, the common software/code patterns used, the skills required to use the framework, and the technologies involved in deploying a production Hydra Head. The webinar will be aimed at individuals and organizations who are interested in using Hydra to develop their own software solutions and/or to adopt and improve existing open-source Hydra Heads.
