The recent half-day DSpace User Group Meeting held following the SPARC 2010 Digital Repositories Meeting provided an opportunity for over 30 DSpace users to hear updates about current development activity with the software and related products as well as participate in a hands-on tutorial on batch metadata editing. The 2010 SPARC (Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition) Digital Repositories Meeting this week managed to combine serious talk about the challenges of open data, examining both successes and failures, with an efficient and informative showcase, the Innovation Fair, featuring rapid-fire presentations of tools and services from institutional repositories (IR).

Ithaca, NY Peter Dietz, Systems Developer/Engineer, Ohio State University Libraries and DSpace 1.7 Release Manager has announced that the first release candidate for DSpace 1.7 is now available for beta testing.

Some key new features to be on the lookout for are:

Mirage -- A clean new theme for XMLUI

Curation System -- A system for admins to perform curation tasks (such as virus scans, file format detection, metadata inspection) on their data.

Ithaca, NY Cloud storage and compute services are here to stay for higher education. University and college leaders from campuses in 41 countries gathered at EDUCAUSE 2010 to look for ways to cut costs while amplifying their efforts in 38 sessions that focused on aspects of cloud computing, storage, strategies and services.
